Engineered vs solid hardwood in Arizona.
In most of the country this is a matter of preference. On a Phoenix slab it's closer to a rule — and the reasons have nothing to do with which one is "better wood".
Somewhere along the way "engineered" picked up the smell of a compromise, and it costs people good floors. So let's start by killing that.
The part people get wrong
On an engineered floor, the surface you walk on, see, and one day sand is real sawn hardwood — the same species, cut the same way, finished the same way as a solid board. What's different is what sits underneath it. Engineered construction doesn't change the wood you look at; it changes how the board behaves.

1. How each one is built
Solid hardwood is one piece of wood, top to bottom, usually 3/4 of an inch thick. Simple, traditional, and it moves as one lump in response to humidity.
Engineered hardwood is three to five layers of wood glued together and stacked cross-grained — each ply running at right angles to the one beneath it — with a real hardwood wear layer on top. Because wood moves mainly across the grain, laying plies at ninety degrees means each layer physically restrains the next. The board barely moves.
2. Why a concrete slab decides the argument
Almost every home in the Valley is built slab-on-grade: the floor sits directly on concrete, which sits directly on the ground. That creates two conditions solid hardwood doesn't like.
Moisture from below. Concrete is not a barrier. Moisture migrates up through a slab, and a solid board absorbing it from one side while drying from the other is a board that cups.
Air that swings. Phoenix interiors run air conditioning most of the year, and indoor humidity drops into single digits. Then a monsoon spell arrives, or the HVAC goes off during a remodel, and it climbs. Wood chases that balance every time. A solid board on a slab spends its life opening gaps in the dry months and closing them tight in the humid ones. A cross-grained engineered board mostly doesn't.
Engineered can also be installed below grade, where solid simply cannot. And it's what makes wide plank possible here at all — a seven-inch solid board on a slab in this climate would be a slow-motion disaster.

3. The wear layer is the number that decides everything
If you take one thing from this article, take this. Engineered flooring is not one product; it's a category that runs from excellent to disposable, and the specification that separates them is the wear layer — the thickness of real wood on top.
A sawn wear layer of 3 mm or more can normally take one full sanding or a couple of light ones. That's a floor you keep and restore. A thin rotary-peeled veneer cannot be sanded at all; go at it and you'll be through to the ply. That's a floor you eventually replace.
Both get sold as "engineered hardwood". Ask for the thickness in millimetres, and be suspicious of any quote that won't state it. The French oak we carry sits at 3 mm sawn, which is why refinishing it later is a real option rather than a marketing line.
4. When solid hardwood still wins
It isn't obsolete, and we sell and install it.
- Over a wood subfloor — typically a second storey. The conditions solid doesn't like simply aren't there.
- When you want maximum lifespan — a 3/4-inch solid floor can be sanded several times across its life. Over fifty years that matters.
- When you're matching an existing solid floor — in an older Phoenix home with original hardwood, matching what's there beats construction theory. This is much of our repair work.
5. Longstrip, parquet and the rest of the vocabulary
Longstrip is an engineered variant, sometimes called floating: three plies bonded into pre-assembled boards up to about seven feet long and seven inches wide, with a softer core carrying the tongue and groove. It's cost-effective because the visible top layer can be a premium species while the core is not. Installs floating, glued, stapled or nailed depending on the subfloor.
Parquet isn't a construction at all — it's a pattern. Individual slats, called filets, arranged into geometric layouts and usually glued straight down. Herringbone, chevron and basketweave live here. Slower to lay, more waste, and spectacular in the right room. We've laid herringbone in Tempe.
Laminate has no wood surface whatsoever. It's a photographic print under a wear layer. It resists scratching well and costs less, but it can't be sanded, can't be refinished, and never develops character. When it wears out it gets replaced; a hardwood floor gets repaired.
6. Species: oak, maple, hickory and the exotics
Once construction is settled, species is mostly about colour and grain — with one practical wrinkle that catches people out.
Oak is the benchmark for good reason. Its open, visible grain doesn't just look right; it disguises everyday wear. Scratches from grit, chair legs and claws blend into the pattern instead of announcing themselves. European (French) oak is the same family, milled and graded differently — longer, wider, graded for character. It's what we sell most of.
Maple tests harder than oak on the Janka scale, so it resists deep dents slightly better. But its tight, uniform grain leaves scratches nowhere to hide, especially under a dark stain or a glossy finish. The wood underneath is hard, so the marks are shallow — they're just easy to see until the floor is buffed. Harder is not the same as better-wearing.
Hickory is harder still, with strong rustic character. Walnut and cherry bring depth and warmth at the cost of softness. Brazilian walnut, tigerwood and Brazilian cherry are exotics with dramatic colour that shifts noticeably in the first months under Arizona sun — worth knowing before you fall for a sample under showroom lighting.
Whatever the species, in this climate the texture and sheen do more for how a floor ages than hardness does. Wire-brushed and hand-scraped surfaces hide abrasion; low sheens hide everything. There's more on that in the floors and finishes guide.

Questions we get asked
Is engineered hardwood real wood?
Yes. The surface you walk on, see and refinish is a solid layer of real sawn hardwood. What differs is what sits beneath it: three to five plies of wood stacked cross-grained instead of one thick piece. The visible material is identical.
Why is engineered better on a concrete slab?
Wood expands and contracts across its width as it exchanges moisture with the air. Stacking plies at right angles to each other means each layer restrains the next, so the board barely moves. On a slab — where moisture can migrate up from the concrete and indoor humidity swings hard — that stability is what keeps joints closed.
When does solid hardwood still make sense in Arizona?
Over a structurally sound wood subfloor, typically upstairs, and when you want a floor that can be sanded many times across several decades. It's also the traditional choice in older homes with existing solid floors, where matching matters more than construction theory.
Can engineered hardwood be refinished?
It depends on the wear layer. A sawn layer of 3 mm or more will normally take a full sand or a couple of light ones. A thin rotary-peeled veneer will not, and sanding it goes straight through. Ask for the wear layer thickness in millimetres before you buy — it's the number that decides whether you own a floor or a surface.
